How To Maintain Your Car’s Air Conditioner?

The air conditioner in your car is one of the most used functions of your vehicle, along with the heater. Like many other components in your vehicle, if you don’t make sure that it is properly maintained, it won’t run as efficiently as it should, and you will end up spending more than necessary on the upkeep of your vehicle. You don’t have to take your car to a mechanic every time you need to have some maintenance done on its AC unit, especially since there are plenty of items that you can do at home on your own. In order to maintain the AC unit in your car and get many more years out of it, there are some things that you can do without having to take the vehicle to a mechanic that we will discuss in the upcoming sections.

How Does Air Conditioning Work in Cars?

Air conditioners in cars work the same way as the ones in your home. The air conditioner uses a compressor to compress the gas refrigerant and release it into the car’s engine bay.

The compressed refrigerant passes through an expansion valve and then through the condenser coil. The condenser coil is located outside of your car’s engine bay, and this is where it gets cold. When the gas refrigerant passes through this coil, it releases heat into the air, which cools down your vehicle.

From there, your car air conditioner works just like any other system in your home: it pumps out hot air through one hose while pulling in cooler air through another. This works by using an evaporator coil inside your car’s cabin which pulls in hot air from outside and expels cold air into your vehicle’s interior

Inspecting The A/C System & Keeping It Running

There are a few things you can do for great car air conditioner maintenance. First, you should inspect the system regularly. You should check all of the fittings, hoses, and belts, as well as any electrical connections that may be loose or corroded. You should also check for leaks by looking at all of the hoses. If you see any signs of leaking, then you will need to take immediate action because this could cause serious damage to other parts of your car.

Fixing the Cooling Coil

If a cooling coil is damaged, it must be repaired or replaced. The most common way this happens is when someone hits something with their car. You may not even notice that your cooling coil has been hit until you hear a noise coming from the back of your vehicle and see fluids leaking out of it. It’s important to get this fixed as soon as possible because if left alone, rust could spread throughout other parts of your car and make driving impossible.

If you’re a driver, you probably know how important it is to keep your car’s air conditioning system in good shape. After all, the AC system is one of the most important parts of your vehicle. A malfunctioning AC system can make driving on a hot day miserable and dangerous.

Have It Cleaned by Professionals

Air conditioning systems are also expensive to repair or replace, so it pays off to take steps to ensure that they remain in good condition.

Here are some things you should do:

  • Keep your car’s air filter clean and replace it when necessary. The air filter prevents dirt and debris from entering the engine, so if it gets clogged up, it can cause serious damage. This can also affect fuel economy and engine performance.
  • Have your car’s air conditioning inspected every year by a professional technician. Your technician will check all equipment related to your AC system and make any necessary repairs to keep the system functioning properly.
  • Regularly check the hoses, belts, and fuses that connect the various parts of your AC system together for wear or damage that could cause leaks or other problems with operation. If there are any signs of trouble with these parts, get them fixed right away before more damage occurs.

Check the Refrigerant Every Year

Refrigerant levels should be checked at least once a year and refilled if necessary. To check the refrigerant level, open the hood and locate the compressor in front of the radiator. Locate the small pinhole on top of the compressor; use an automotive-size pin to insert into this hole and remove any liquid that comes out. If there is no liquid or very little, then you do not need to add any refrigerant. If there are more than a few drops of liquid, then you will need to add more refrigerant. Add only as much as needed so that there is no liquid coming out when you remove the pin.

It is important to note that if you want your car’s air conditioner to operate at its best, then you should take care of it regularly. This will help maintain the life of the air conditioner in your car, as well as keep you safe on the road.
